PEEWEE RED

Game 4 - Score: I.G.   6         ICE LOONG    0

With our lineup finally back in tact the Red’s came out looking great. With the exception of a few lapses that led to some breakaways – which were all turned away by Brad or a scrambling defenseman- the team was very dominant from whistle to whistle. We were held to only a goal through the first half of play with their goalie turning away 20 plus shots but began to open up in the third period as their incredible goaltender began to fatigue.   Our offense was well distributed as all scorers only had singles (including JoeJoe’s first ever goal - the ref was nice enough to let us keep the puck after some sweet talking from Zhang Zhang, who had become famous for other less complimentary interactions with the refs…) A good effort from an improving team.

Game 3 - Score: I.G.   4         WEI LONG    1

The Red team had gotten off to a rough start with two losses in close games where solid efforts were negated by a lot undisciplined play and at times a lack of intensity/urgency. With one of our top players still suspended the Red’s still managed to come out fired up. Led by a natural hat trick by Hansen and a great blue line we finally got into the win column. We all had high expectations for this team so it is good to see them starting to get on track.

ATOMS

GAME 3 - I.G.   5         LITTLE WOLVES  B   1

Another team which had gotten off to a rocky start after mixed results in Harbin was our Atoms. Spawned mostly from last year’s very successful  tyke team in addition to some very strong newcomer’s the Atom’s learned early on this season that they aren’t going to be able to walk through the competition as they had done last year. It seems that most of our kids took note of this fact and turned in a great performance in our first league win of the season. Led by our strong defensive core of Big Beautiful Bob, Marcus, Noah, Rain and newcomer Allan, and anchored by the goaltending duo of Matthew and Brian, we were able to make some key plays in our zones, effectively neutralizing our opponents which in turn got our offense rolling. Although a lot of our offense came on individual efforts, (e.g. streaking forwards, or Rain taking the puck end to end for a goal) flashes of very promising and effective team play were common which  is very good to see and gives us as coaches a lot of confidence moving forward.  Great job guys and let’s keep it rolling into next weekend.

TYKES

GAME 3 - I.G.   13         LITTLE WOLVES   B     0

Despite most of the team playing their first organized hockey ever, the tykes had still managed to be 1 and 1 this season so far, but they were still without a real breakthrough win to give them confidence in their abilities. This was that game for them. After a few minutes  of tight play, Henry sprung loose and scored two quick goals to give us an early lead. From then on the tykes let loose with nearly everyone getting a chance to score at least once and although a forward took home the MVP cup (Henry who finished with 4 goals) it was our defense who really put us over the top with Ethan, Roy and Tiger each scoring at least two goals as well as being successful in shutting down the Little Wolves offense and helping our goalie, Harvard, in securing his first career shutout, a monumental achievement considering the high scoring nature of Tyke hockey.  Great job Tykes, best game we have ever seen from you!

MVP – Henry

GAME 2 -  I.G.   0          LITTLE WOLVES   20

As the score immediately indicates, this was not a competitive game for our kids.  The Little Wolves team is made up of mostly 2003 players who all have extensive experience playing hockey.  Once again, the positioning of our players was not good and too often we were chasing the puck around the ice instead of thinking about the correct position we were supposed to be in.  The best efforts in this game came from Tiger Zhou, William Wu and Roy Shaver who all had some good scoring chances but were unable to find the back of the net.  Even though this score line is discouraging, we are confident we can close the gap with the Little Wolves.  Last year, we also lost by a substantial margin in our first game against this team but ultimately we defeated them in the championship game.  We are hopeful that we can do the same thing this season.  We need to have full and complete effort from each and every player if we are to do this.

                    COACHES' WELCOME MESSAGE 2011-12

Hello!  We, Tom McCabe, JP Piltzmaker, Mark Simon and Curtis Dracz are the coaches of the Imperial Guard Ice Hockey Club.  Joining the Imperial Guard family is something that we take very seriously.  It means that both players and parents are making a commitment to always working hard (on and off the ice), being a good teammate, participating in all Imperial Guard team activities and having fun!

We would like to outline some of the important things to remember this year:

1)       Throughout the season, we will have two regular practices every week, both at the Hokay rink (Tyke has one at Long De).  Skating is the most important part of being a good hockey player so all practices will include a lot of this component.  Other individual skills as well as team play, positioning and attitude will also be worked on.

                            PEEWEE GOLD GAME SUMMARIES:

NOVEMBER 26, 2011

Game 6 – Score: IG GOLD 28 – All-Star Team 0

The sixth game of our season was by far the least competitive.  The other team really has no right being in the same league as the 4-5 stronger teams.  Losing every game by +/-20 goals can’t be good for their confidence!  From our end, however, the kids did very well.  There was excellent passing, no threat on our goal and good sportsmanship was displayed.  Jack Gao played his best game of the year, making great decisions at the offensive blue line and being a rock when the other team mounted any semblance of an attack.  Ian Walker essentially had a day off but his presence in our net helps our skaters play with a relaxed poise that would not exist with another goalie.  We controlled 95% of the play in the other team’s end and usually were passing in such a way that all 5 players touched the puck.  We then got effective point shots from Eerik Harju, Alex Lee and Jack.  Sanford Ren got into the action late but was still able to contribute with slashing rushes through the neutral zone.  Joose Harju and Sam Metz led the team and made sure that everyone played unselfishly.

Game 5 – Score: IG GOLD 4 – Wei Long 2

This was our worst game of the year.  We were lucky to have walked away with a win in this game even though the other team scored two lucky goals.  It was Sam Metz who took control in this game with help from line-mate Tony Wang.  Sam had three goals and also setup Jonathan Huang for an empty-netter.  All facets of our game were lacklustre in this contest: defensive zone positioning was lazy, fore-checking was not intense enough and we were not playing smart hockey with the puck.  Playing without captain Joose Harju, too many players seemed like they were looking for him to lead the team and seemed lost when they would remember he wasn’t there.  We will have to address the lack of spark that was missing in this game to make sure that we don’t have a letdown going into games against two of the weaker teams in the league.

Game 4 – Score: IG GOLD 3 – Century Star/Snow Leopard 1

This was a solid game all-around for our team.  Ian Walker backstopped the team to a great win with all the troops coming out to play well in front of him.  The opposition was a strong team that we could not at all take lightly.  Playing well in our defensive zone was a key to the game as well as a strong fore-checking effort.  The difference in all our games, though we are not always winning by big margins, is the puck pursuit and overall effort we display compared to the other teams.  We were certainly not more talented than this group but we have better hockey IQ and more resolve to come out on top.  Determination is hard to teach and we are lucky that so many of our kids possess this attribute.  Having gone 4 – 0 through the beginning stretch of the season with the three weakest teams left in the first round, is a great confidence boost for us.  We will make sure to keep the energy level high when going through the weaker teams in the coming few weeks...

NOVEMBER 5, 2011

Game 3 – Score: IG GOLD 5 – Beijing United 3

We knew that ‘United’ defeated our IG Red team in week 2 so we were ready for a tough game.  It was obvious that everyone was taking this game seriously as our defensive zone coverage and fore-checking was much improved from the first two games.  Getting a hat trick from Apple Wang, solid puck movement from the back by Sanford Ren and an overall gritty effort from Jonathan Huang, Max Li, Chris Shen and Jeffrey Nakano were the keys to the game.  We fell asleep on two of the other team’s three goals so this was not a perfect game as we did not protect the slot as efficiently as we should have, making life too difficult for Ian Walker in goal.  Making sure that we battle hard for all three periods and continuing to improve our conditioning during practices will be our main goals moving forward.  United is a good team that will no doubt be battling it out with us throughout the season...

OCTOBER 22, 2011

Game 2 - Score: IG GOLD 6 – Tiger Champion 1

After having an emotional win in game 1 of the season, getting motivated for game 2 against a team we did not expect to be very strong, was tough.  Without Eerik and Sam, the guys knew that it would be a tall task to win this game and keep up the high level of play demonstrated the previous week.  Thankfully, despite giving up an early goal, the team was able to overcome the adversity and roar back with 6 unanswered goals.  Daniel Chan helped out by playing defence for the first time in a year and we also got great bounce-back games from Jack Gao and Sanford Ren.  Team captain Joose Harju, along with line-mate Tony Wang, made up the first part of a great one-two scoring punch with Simon Jiang and Apple Wang being the other part of it.  Both tandems were unstoppable in the offensive zone.  The game was out of hand after the second period and we were able to maintain a solid rhythm throughout the third, on the way to a relatively easy victory.  Ian Walker was solid between the pipes and deserved to get a shut-out in this one.  It was also apparent, however, that we still need to work on our defensive zone coverage and our fore-checking.
